Have you looked in the mirror recently and had a hard time truly recognizing yourself? Are you feeling more tired than usual? Maybe you’ve been scrolling through social media and wondering why you don’t look quite the same in your older pictures.
Everyone gets older, and your body changes with time. While that’s not really a surprise, it can certainly feel like one when you’re going through it. You might think you’re too young to experience those changes, or you might not feel like you’re ready to go through this stage of life.
Whatever the case, it’s important to know how to cope with midlife body changes. You might not look or feel the same as you used to, and while that’s normal, it isn’t always easy to swallow.
So, what can you do to embrace this chapter of life?
Stay Physically Healthy
Prioritizing your physical health is important at every stage. However, as your body starts changing, it’s essential to stay active for your overall well-being. As you age, your metabolism slows, your muscles weaken, and your bones become less dense. Regular exercise helps to combat those issues so you can remain strong and healthy.
Maintaining a healthy diet will also help with hormonal balance, bone health, and energy levels. That doesn’t mean you have to give up foods you love. However, prioritizing fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is a good idea for your diet.
Finally, make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Doing so will give your body a chance to “heal” every night. Adequate sleep also helps with everything from hormone regulation to fighting back against fatigue.
Redefine Your Expectations
You don’t need to let go of the desire to have a healthy body you’re proud of as you get older. However, you also can’t ignore the fact that things are changing, and adapting to those changes is necessary.
One of the best things you can do is to adopt a positive mindset about midlife body changes. Redefine what it means to have self-worth and beauty. Be kind and compassionate to yourself. Make self-care a priority every day by engaging in activities that help you feel more in-tune with your body. Things like yoga, mindfulness, and meditation are great places to start.
This also might be a good time to reinvent yourself as you embrace your bodily changes. Consider trying a new hobby, taking a class, or pushing yourself with a physical challenge, such as a half-marathon or a long hike.
Nurture Your Mental Well-Being
It’s important to remember that you’re not alone as you’re going through these changes. Even if you’re able to embrace them, it doesn’t mean dealing with them every day is easy. Being able to talk to someone can make a big difference. Consider individual counseling for women in midlife to help you along the way. It will give you the chance to express your concerns and understand what’s triggering them. More importantly, you’ll learn strategies that can help you love your body at this stage of life and make the most of what it has to offer.
Taking care of your mental health will make it easier to love your physical body. Understand that it’s normal to feel a wide range of emotions as you’re going through changes.
Instead of giving in to negative self-talk about your body, fight back with gratitude and positive affirmations about what your body has done for you — and continues to do. Maybe you’ve been able to bear children or get through a terrible illness. Maybe you’ve been a talented athlete or a caregiver for others. Don’t downplay the things your body has done, and look forward to the things you can still do in the future!
